AI English Practice Is Great, Until You Need to Talk to a Real Person

You are probably considering using an AI app for your English speaking practice. I completely understand why. The technology has improved so much lately, and apps like ELSA Speak, Preply AI, and Promova promise something very appealing. They offer convenient, judgment-free practice anytime you want.

No scheduling with other people. No embarrassment about making mistakes. Just you and your AI speaking partner, practising from the comfort of your own home.

I have spoken with hundreds of women who started their English journey exactly this way. They tell me that at first, it feels amazing. But then, almost all of them hit the same wall. They realise that while AI is a fantastic tool that makes you feel like you are getting ready, it cannot actually prepare you for the one thing you really want. A real conversation.

Let's look at why that happens, and what you can do about it.

What is AI actually good for?

AI speaking apps offer genuine help, especially when you are just starting out or if you need to focus on very specific skills.

If you want to get comfortable speaking English aloud in an empty room, AI is perfect. If you need instant feedback on your pronunciation, or if you want to drill specific vocabulary words until you remember them, these apps are incredibly useful. Your AI partner is never tired, never impatient, and always ready to correct you.

These are real advantages. They give you a safe, private space to build your foundational skills.

So where does the progress stop?

The frustration usually starts when you reach an intermediate level. You might notice that your progress slows down, or that the practice starts to feel a bit repetitive.

One member told me, "I was improving quickly at first, but then it became boring. I can talk to the app, but when someone I meet in real life asks me a question, it is a completely different feeling. Somehow I never feel ready for it."

Why does this happen? Because AI operates within scripted boundaries. It predicts what it should say next based on patterns. As you may have noticed, it is also constantly trying to please you. But real conversations are alive. They take unexpected turns. People interrupt each other, they pause, they laugh, they change the subject because something you said reminded them of a funny story. Not all human interactions are positive (as I'm sure you know!).

There is also the issue of constant correction. Instant feedback is useful for pronunciation drills, but in a real conversation, too much correction actually kills the flow and affects recall. 'Recall' is your ability to find, in your mind, the place you store information. Constant correction actually weakens your ability to do this. You become dependent on someone else giving you the perfect answer.

Real conversations are not about being perfect in every single sentence. They are about being understood. When an app corrects every small mistake, it reinforces the false belief that you need to be perfect before you can speak freely.

Why does practising with real people feel so different?

When you look closely at what makes a conversation meaningful, you realise it is exactly what AI is missing. Being human.

AI is culturally blind. It does not have a story. It cannot laugh with you about traditions from your home country, or share what it feels like to celebrate a new child coming into your family.

One of our Hey Lady! members used AI apps for six months before joining us. She shared a story that has always stayed with me. "The app helped me practise speaking more often, which I appreciated. But it could not teach me why my Australian colleagues laughed when I said something completely normal in my language. That only clicked when I talked with women who had lived through those moments."

Real people bring lived experience. AI can be programmed to say the right words when you are tired or grieving, but it is not real empathy. It has never lived those experiences because it is artificial.

It has never felt grief, joy, rage, or pride. It does not understand what it is like to be left out of a conversation, or the exhiliration of finally being included. Language is what allows us to exchange and understand those deeply human experiences, and that requires another human.

And here is something else to consider. AI is one-on-one. But life is not. Your work meetings, family dinners, and social events involve groups. Each person has their own personality and tone. Navigating that dynamic, reading the room, knowing when to speak up, requires experience. That is where real confidence grows, and it is impossible to develop in a one-on-one AI environment.

What if the reason you are not ready is the reason you should start?

At an English conference, I met many women who told me they want to use AI until their English is "good enough" to talk to real people. They believe they need to be perfect first, and then they will be ready.

But readiness comes from doing, not waiting. The fear of not being good enough is the exact reason you need to start practising with people, not a reason to hide behind an app. Or hope that an app can help you to 'skip' the work you actually need to do.

Every confident woman I know who speaks English as a second language once felt exactly as you do now. They did not overcome their fear by practising alone. They overcame it by stepping into a safe space with other people, making mistakes, and realising that the world did not end. They discovered that people cared more about their ideas than their grammar.

How to use AI and human practice together

You do not have to choose one or the other. A smart approach uses both, if you have the time.

Think of AI as a gym where you practise repetitive activities. Use it for daily pronunciation drills, or to rehearse specific phrases before an important event.

But think of human conversation as the sport itself. This is where you apply everything you have learned. Use real conversations to build your fluency, your cultural understanding, and your ability to connect authentically with others as your true self.

The next step on your journey

You started looking into AI apps because you want to improve your English. But I suspect what you really want is the confidence to express yourself, to build meaningful friendships, and to feel like your true self in English.

AI can help you with the words, but only people can help you with the connection.

If you are ready to take that step, to move from practising in private to connecting in real life, we have created a space just for you. Hey Lady! is a safe, supportive community of women from all over the world who are practising together, making mistakes together, and building real confidence.

You do not need to be perfect to join us. You just need to be you.
